About Bournemouth's unique weather

It is well known amongst meteorologists that Bournemouth's weather is consistently better than almost anywhere else in the UK. One of the reasons for this is the fact that nearly every low pressure system that blows in from the Atlantic completely misses Bournemouth. Generally what happens is that the storm will hit land 200 miles down the coast, at the extreme south western corner of the UK and then track diagonally across the country in a Northerly direction. The worst that Bournemouth might expect is a much weakened version of the low pressure system.

Bournemouth's sunny micro cllimate

The Bournemouth weather is very temperate almost all the year round and even when there is frost on the ground, Bournemouth’s temperatures are still several degrees above the rest of the country. We have a special page showing the average annual weather statistics specifically for Bournemouth in an easy to read graph, the information gathered over many years. Bournemouth's mild climate is a big draw for tourists whose prime reason for visiting the area is the stunning weather.

The Bournemouth weather is divided in to two clear regions, the coast and the urbanised areas. There is generally less rainfall and cloud at the coast and many more hours of sun per day. This is due to Bournemouth’s unique microclimate which the lucky local residents get to enjoy 365 days of the year! These localised atmospheric conditions can be very different from even 10 miles down the road. Many factors come in to play to provide Bournemouth with this unique weather system; the shape of the surrounding hills and valleys, the angle of the slope of the local land mass and the way that it is facing, the town’s proximity to the sea and finally the unusual urbanisation spread. Large residential areas create a lot of heat when warming throughout the day when compared to the open farm land, where the temperatures are much lower.
